Are we losing the art of reading?

This question merits the attention of all the youth. The treasury of Christian books is being badly ignored called upon to be living in the blessings of Christ are the youth properly equipped with the knowledge required to have a coherent message.

The Historian Carlyle observed good books add to happiness of a home. The true university of these days is a collection of books. An Italian proverb says: There is no friend so faithful as a good book there is no worse robber than a bad book. The books which help you most, are these which you think the most wrote such as Theodore Parker an American Priest.

Spiritual books biblical commentaries the lives of the saints, books on Church History, Rites, Theology Patristic and Christian Magazines and Journals are essential to nourish the heart and mind. Which is nearest to hand? Pope Shenouda’s “The Life of Faith” or the sports pages and the TV program?

Over the last two decades several dedicated person have invested a tremendous effort to translate books from Arabic to English. The books have been invaluable to the youth in conveying to them their rich Orthodox Christian Heritage. Regrettably many have not utilized this and it is imperative so that they furnish their hearts and minds with the materials of knowledge necessary for shaping their Christian perceptions and attitudes.

Would we starve our bodies of necessary proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins the way that we are denying our minds nourishment through reading, a habit we all should cultivate is: “Is off to read and ruminate.”
